MLO 1: Language and Communication
Outcomes:
1.1. Students are able to communicate effectively in Japanese in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational; and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Intermediate-High level of language proficiency, according to the ACTFL Guidelines.
1.2. Students gain competency in the Japanese language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse and compare and analyze the structural differences between Japanese and English.
Reflective Narrative:
1.1. My study abroad at CSUMB definitely contributes to achieving this MLO. It gave me a lot of opportunities to speak English. For example, I always talked to my American roommate in English. At first, she could not understand my English but I gradually could come to communicate with her. Finally, I could establish a good relationship and we are good friends now.
1.2. English pronunciation was very difficult for me. For example, I could not tell between "L" and "R" at first. I have a funny story during my study abroad. I went to my friend's hometown and stayed with her family during winter break. She could understand my English, but her father could not understand me very well. One day, I enjoyed aqua aerobics with her mother in the morning. Then in the evening, her father and I was watching TV together and I said, "My hands still smell pool," Then he looked very surprised and he said, "What?! Your hands smell POOP?!" I corrected the mistake and we laughed so hard. It was one of the funniest moment in my life. During my study abroad, I made many mistakes in grammar and pronunciation, but I did not give up telling my feelings and opinions to my friends. I believe that this attitude enabled me to improve my English ability.
